Website

Ok i need to start thinking about this website, i might arrange a meeting with jamie to ask if he could help. I know there are website where i can create my own but i dont know if its best starting from scratch.

I want it to show not just the project i am doing at the moment but also me and a person and what i am all about.
Need to think about:

>colour
>layout
>design
>content

My idea

Ok i have a final idea that i will be putting into my learning argeement. I am seeing zoe this evening to discuss it so this might change.

Cut out wardrobe studio in the ultralounge

1980'S Bunty

I managed to find a 1980's copy of the back of a bunty's magazine with the cut out wardrobe on. I really wanted to find a copy from this time to see what the outfits where like.

Bunty comic. Issue 1198. Dec 27th 1980.

The text of the cut out wardrobe hasnt changed so i think i might keep it like this if i use it on the back drop

I found these two fonts which work quite well

BRAGGADOCIO FONT

Things i will need to source...

> A rail for the cut outs - i have a rail at home which i can use, it wouldnt have to be the long because the cuts are thin. However i could have two. one for men and one for women.

> Camera, i have a film slr camera but i think i digital would be better, i know a few people who have a digital slr i can use.

> Backdrop, for this i would need a big bit of paper, we have rolls at uni so i could ask if i could rip off some. Also i should have a few rolls just in case one gets damaged or dirty.

> Card for the cut outs, i am not sure where i will get this from i might have order it in.

Heres a better one!

I re-did the previous one and added more detail!

Sample layout

I know this isnt the actual ultralounge space but i just wanted to create a sample space to get a general idea. Obviously this is really basic, but i was thinking of something like this...

I want a life size rail and to some how hang all the different cut outs up like they would be in a shop. I thought of having the backdrop the same colour as the old bunty magazine i have posted up. I think this will give the photos a better look and also have some sort of title up the top.

Talked to Zoe

I sent zoe an email explaining about my new idea about having the life size cut out wardrobes and she really liked it. She suggested that i make the cut outs replicas of the outfits that her and andrea will be wearing. I think this is a brilliant idea and shes going to send me a document with some pictures in.

Things i need to think about:

The actual size of the cut outs?
Whether i will have men and women?
How they will be presented in in the ultra lounge?
Am i going to have a back drop for when i take the photos?
What camera i will use?
How the pictures will be presented?
Will the public be allowed to take copies?

i think i would also like to have some old school 80's ones aswell like the ones from bunty's cut out wardrobe.

Look what i found...

selfridges advert - 1980's vogue
advertising their fur couter for edelson!
thought this was quite cool.

Vogue adverts from the 1980'S

Jere are some appropriate adverts i found in some 80's issues of vogue. I really like the typography i might see if i can find some the replicate them.

midas advert - oct 15th 1980 pg 60
I love the colour's in this advert and the way the its just the legs. Gives it a sort of mannequin feel. All the details make it 80's like the shoes, the art nouveau chair and the blue sky back drop.

Rodenstock advert - june 17th 1985 pg17

I like this one because of the sequins and typical 80's glasses. Again the colouring of the advert, this is obviously to do with the photography at the time, i think this would be a good touch to have if i do the photos of people in the life size cut outs.

I might achieve this effect by photoshopping? need to investigate
Silhouette fashion frames advert - june 1985 pg 55
This advert caught my eye because of the pink wig! I know the girls love this kind of stuff and you can see why.

Cutout wardrobe

I really like the idea of the cut out woredrobe. I was thinking of making lifesize ones and getting people to pick the ones they like and getting their picture taken with them on. Maybe the images can be projected on a wall or put on a website.

These were some old pictures i had from a different project. I photoshopped the dresses and coats from the back on the buntys magazine.

I want to do this idea, need to think about size's of the cut outs and whether to have mens aswell as women. Also how these cut outs will be placed on to the person, held, hung, stuck on etc. also how the pictures will be presented.

Need to talk to zoe about my ideas and whether she likes them and if there even do-able.
Also should i do this aswell as the advertising?

Some posters i have made

Here are some posters i have made for the event. i tea stained some photocopies of adverts and comics. i think they might be to soft? Think they could be a bit more tacky maybe a bit more collaged.

80's women from old issue of vogue, collaged with big tacky clips on and some bright pink lips. details at bottom. Not sure what details are most important.

I really like this one. i used another 80's women from a vogue. this time colouring her in with bright colours and giving her a thought bubble wishing to be a paper eater. Few more details at the bottom than the other one.

Speach Bubbles

I like the illustrations in these magazines! i really like the speach bubbles aswell. i think this could be quite good as a shape for the pickets. I could have giant speach bubbles advertising the paper eaters at selfridges!

1980

I got given this bunty magazine for my 21st birthday from one of my friends! its definitely a good example of what zoe wants.

Here are some scans.

I love how these are all gruby and dirty bit stained. i could use this in my flyers, i could do some tea and coffee staining to achieve this effect.

I also love the little dot to dot on the right hand page. This is the type of things i think 'the girls' want to be happening at paper eaters.

These are also really cool. i especially like the cut-out wardrobe. This would be so fun if you could do this life size! and get pictures of people that come down in them.
Again with the competition page on the right, i really like this idea of sending off and receiving things in the post. Everyone likes getting letters and post! its very exciting.
Also the prizes are brilliant.
wrist watch
pogo stick
ski 'n' skate
l.p. record f your choice
giant oil-by-numbers set
and 30 guitar brooches as consolation prizes

ha! how good are they!

Me

Hello!

My names jessica jarvis and i hopefully will be help 'the girls' with 'paper eaters'.

I love being hands on and making things, gluing, sticking, painting and making. I also would love to get involved in advertising. from speaking to zoe she said that if we want to get involved in the store we also have to dress up. I am very excited about this!

My last project was all about dressing up and getting people to dress up aswell. so i thought i would carry on this theme and help 'the girls' get everyone dressing up with them.

I had an idea of doing some bright advertising for the event. maybe going out into london with some flyers and posters and some sort of tacky flowery picket.

Obviously not like this one but want one nice and big!

The Girls

These are two fabulous women who were brought together through university! they love the 1980's and anything broken or tacky. They started out in the art world with self portraits which even won them a few competitions.

'BARBARA'

'CARE BEARS'

'CORN FED'

Now back in 2010! they will be the artists-in-residence at the one and only selfridges. located in the ultra lounge (lower ground floor) for the whole month of april!
Please come and visit!

This event is called 'the paper eaters' and is all based around the question, 'what's happening to paper?' Magazines and newspapers are fast turning to the world wide web. whether this is because of money or just keeping up with the times. They will be showing the value of paper and how its nice to have a copy.
They will be producing three magazines throughout april, all in the style of old 80's magazines like buntys and programmes like the goonies and press gang.
